Rifle is one of items in The Long Dark. You can shoot the gun. You can kill Wolves, Deer, or maybe rabbits, although Hinterland (The makers of the game) would probably suggest using a Flare Gun or stones for killing a rabbit. (Stones can only stun rabbits, so you have to pick up the rabbit and twist the neck to kill it)
