Eating it is better than starving, probably. ~TLD Dog Food Description
Hunger is a mechanic in The Long dark centered around calories. It is one of the largest priorities in game because failure to keep Hunger at a constant positive state can result in Starvation. When starving condition will decrease, although not as drastically as Dehydration. Early on in game Hunger should be a low priority as long as you loot the right locations because food is basically littered everywhere, But as a game progresses it will become more evident as a problem when food becomes scarce.
Management
Hunger is reliant of two other mechanics, Calorie Store, and Calorie Burn. The more calories you have, the more time you have before you starve. You can store a max. of 2500 calories before you become Full and can't eat anymore. It is advised to always keep some food item on you at all times incase necessary. Carrying to much food at once can result in your backpack weighing too much and decrease fatigue.
Variables
- By performing activities such as Breaking Branches you will burn more calories than by just standing.
- Sprinting and walking both also result in calorie burn increasing.
